Windscreen Fitting

Motorhome Heroes – We understand all aspects of motorhome windscreens and bodyglass.

Is Your Windscreen Fitted Correctly?

When a windscreen is bonded into a motorhome or campervan, it becomes part of the vehicle’s structure. A perfect fit isn’t just about keeping the rain out—it affects safety, handling, noise levels, and even the accuracy of modern driver-assist systems.

At Motorhome Heroes, we replace and repair windscreens across the UK.

Why motorhomes are extra sensitive to windscreen fit

Here’s how to spot an incorrect install, why it happens (especially on motorhomes), and what you can do about it.

Coachbuilt bodies, long overhangs and cut-through conversions all add torsional flex. That means the windscreen aperture (the “hole” the glass bonds to) can twist more than on a standard van. A correct bond line, right adhesive depth, and proper prep are crucial to allow for that flex without leaks or cracks.

Common scenarios that lead to poor fitting (and the problems they cause)

1. Body flex not accounted for

  • Symptoms: Wind noise on motorways, creaks over speed bumps, stress cracks from corners weeks later.
  • Why motorhomes suffer: Long bodies flex the cab more; the screen needs the correct stand-off for controlled movement.

2. Rust or paint issues on the bonding surface

  • Symptoms: Early leaks, adhesive lifting with the paint, damp behind A-pillar trim, recurring “mystery” wet carpets.
  • Tip: The metal must be clean, sound, and primed—rust must be treated, not just hidden under glue.

3. Contamination during installation

As a result of mobile installs done in poor weather without proper shielding, or rushing prep.

4. Incorrect glass spec or tolerances

  • Symptoms: Trims won’t sit flush, constant wind noise, ADAS cameras out of alignment, wipers not parking right.

5. Skipping ADAS calibration

The screen is replaced but cameras/radar behind it aren’t recalibrated to the new position.

  • Symptoms: Lane departure or traffic sign recognition errors, warning lights, or inconsistent driver-assist behaviour. Many modern motorhomes converted from van platforms require static and/or dynamic calibration after a screen change.

7. Silicone bodge instead of proper bonding

  • What happens: Someone seals a small leak with bathroom-type silicone around the trim.
  • Symptoms: Temporary silence… followed by worse leaks later and a nightmare removal job.

9. Rubber-gasket screens not seated evenly (classic/A-class)

  • What happens: Rope-in technique done poorly, or old perished rubbers re-used.
  • Symptoms: Corner leaks, visible waves in the seal, and wind whistle you can “chase” with your finger.

Think you’ve got a poorly fitted screen?

Don’t panic—and don’t live with towels on the dash. A quick inspection usually pinpoints the cause, and many issues can be corrected without replacing the glass again.

Where removal is necessary, we’ll protect the aperture, restore any damaged paint, and refit the screen to spec with fresh clips and trims.
