Understanding stress cracks in motorhome & campervan windscreens

Stress fractures in a windscreen aren’t always caused by stone chips. On motorhomes and campervans, they often start at the edge of the glass and slowly creep inward, with no visible impact point. At Motorhome Heroes, we see these every week across the UK. Here’s what causes them, how to spot the difference from impact damage, and what to do next.

What is a windscreen stress fracture?

A stress fracture is a crack that forms when internal or external forces exceed the glass’s tolerance without a blunt impact. The front windscreen on your motorhome is laminated (two layers of glass with a plastic interlayer), so it won’t shatter, but a stress crack can spread and compromise safety, MOT compliance, visibility, and weather sealing.

1. Manufacturing stresses (rapid or uneven cooling)

  • What happens: During production, glass can retain residual tension if it cools too quickly or unevenly.
  • On the road: Months later, a temperature swing or body flex can “release” that tension as a fine crack starting from the edge, often with an S-shaped path and no impact crater.

2. Tiny edge flaws from handling

  • What happens: Microscopic chips or scuffs picked up while the screen is being transported or fitted weaken the edge.
  • On the road: Normal flex from driving or a firm door shut can turn that weak point into a crack.

3. Incorrect installation/bond line

  • What happens: An uneven adhesive bead, missing setting blocks, or a screen seated too tight to one side puts constant load into the glass.
  • On the road: You’ll get creaks over bumps and, eventually, a crack that starts at the edge nearest the high stress.

4. Body flex & road shocks (potholes, speed humps, rough pitches)

  • What happens: Motorhomes flex more than cars, especially coachbuilts. A pothole hit, sharp kerb, or aggressive levelling can twist the cab.
  • On the road: That twist concentrates stress at the corners of the screen, triggering a crack without any visible impact mark.

5. Thermal shock (hot/cold extremes)

  • What happens: Rapid temperature differences, like blasting a hot demister onto a frosty screen, pouring hot water on ice, or strong sun on a cold, wet edge.
  • On the road: The temperature gradient sets up internal stress; a crack appears, often vertically from the bottom or at a corner.

How Motorhome Heroes diagnose & fix it

At Motorhome Heroes we follow a structured process: first we pinpoint the crack’s origin (edge stress vs impact) and cause, then inspect the windscreen aperture for corrosion, previous removal damage, or uneven bond lines.

We fit the correct-spec glass and fittings for your base vehicle/conversion, bond it precisely with measured adhesive height, fresh clips and trims, and the right primers, then recalibrate any cameras/sensors with documented results.

Are you seeing a suspicious crack?

Snap a photo of the crack origin and give Motorhome Heroes a call. We’ll confirm whether it’s a stress fracture or impact damage, advise on safety/MOT implications, and, if needed, replace the screen correctly, anywhere in the UK.
