Useful Tips for Motorhome Owners

Motorhome Heroes – We understand all aspects of motorhome windscreens and bodyglass.

Useful Tips for Motorhome Owners

Windscreen & Seal Maintenance

Check the windscreen seals regularly (especially after cold snaps or long motorway drives). If you see gaps, moisture, or mould forming near the dashboard, act early.

Use a soft, non-abrasive cleaner on both sides of the windscreen — grit or particles trapped in dirt can damage seals and after washing, dry edges and corners well!

Bodyglass (Side Windows / Frames)

  • Regularly operate (open/close) your side windows (bodyglass) to ensure mechanisms stay moving — it helps prevent them from seizing over time.
  • Lubricate pivot points and tracks with a suitable lubricant (check manufacturer guidelines).
  • Inspect the frames annually for small cracks or distortion which could lead to water ingress.

Rooflights & Ventilation Points

  • Check rooflight seals, hinges, and handles after winter months when frost and cold may have stressed them.
  • Open them periodically (even if you don’t need to) to keep mechanisms moving.
  • Have spare gaskets on hand — if one fails, you’ll want to replace it quickly to avoid leaks.

Q: How often should I replace rooflight seals?
A: Every 5–8 years is typical for many seals, but inspect annually — if you see cracks, brittleness, or leaks, replace sooner.
Q: Can rooflight leaks cause serious damage?
A: Yes. Water ingress can lead to rot, damp patches, electrical issues, or delamination of panels.

Insurance & Coverage for Glass Repairs

  • When choosing motorhome insurance, check explicitly whether windscreen and window repairs/replacements are included (sometimes only basic cover is given).
  • Some specialist motorhome insurers offer add-ons or glass cover; these options are worth considering given the high cost of major glass work.
  • Keep records/photos of glass condition when you buy — they may be useful for future claims if damage predates your ownership.

Q: Do standard car insurance policies cover motorhome windscreen damage?
A: Often not (or only under limited circumstances). Many policies exclude large specialty glass or charge high excesses.
Q: Will using a non-approved repairer void my insurance claim?
A: It might. If you use a repairer not approved by your insurer, they could refuse your claim, especially if the work affects structural integrity.

Pre-Purchase Checks (Secondhand Motorhomes)

  • Always inspect the windscreen from both inside and outside, looking for tiny cracks or signs of past repairs.
  • Open and operate every window, rooflight, and hinge to test movement.
  • Check for mould, damp patches, or soft spots around the dashboard and walls — often signs of water ingress.
  • Ask the seller for service history (especially glass work, seal replacement, and roof maintenance).
  • If possible, take a day when it’s rained recently or gently hose the roof edges to see if any leaks show.
