Motorhome Pre-Purchase Checklist

Motorhome Heroes – We understand all aspects of motorhome windscreens and bodyglass.

Motorhome Pre-Purchase Checklist

Windscreen & Front Cab

  • Look for leaks around the dashboard and A-pillars. Damp spots, mould, or soft trim = water ingress.
  • Check for cracks or stone chips in the windscreen. Even small chips can spread, and replacements can run into thousands.
  • Inspect seals for perishing or gaps, particularly on older Hymers and Frankias which are prone to windscreen leaks if not resealed.
  • Ask seller for repair history.

Side Windows / Bodyglass

  • Test every window: open, close, lock, and check friction stays hold them in place.
  • Look for cracks or crazing in plastic/acrylic bodyglass.
  • Inspect frames: cracked or warped frames may allow water ingress.
  • Check for condensation inside double-glazed panes — indicates seal failure.

Rooflights & Skylights

  • Open and close fully — mechanisms often seize if not used regularly.
  • Check handles, hinges, and stays aren’t cracked.
  • Inspect rubber seals for brittleness. Water ingress here can damage ceiling panels.
  • Look for staining around the rooflight interior trim — a red flag for leaks.

General Body & Seals

  • Walk around exterior checking for cracks, dents, or delamination.
  • Inspect all mastic joints (roof joins, awning rails, corners). Shrinkage or black mould often means resealing is overdue.
  • Press walls and floor inside cupboards and corners — soft spots suggest damp.

Mechanical & Chassis

  • Service history: check for annual engine servicing and habitation checks.
  • Brakes & suspension: listen for squeaks/knocks.
  • Tyres: even with low mileage, anything older than 6 years may need replacing.

Electrics & Plumbing

  • Test 12V and 240V systems — lights, sockets, charger, fridge.
  • Check leisure battery age (they last ~4–6 years).
  • Run taps and shower: ensure water pump is quiet and pressure steady.
  • Inspect boiler/heating system — Some systems are costly to repair.

Brand-Specific Notes

Frankia / Hymer: Windscreen bonding/seals and panoramic skylights are known weak points if neglected.
Adria: Check side window seals and rooflight mechanisms (prone to stiffening).
Pilote: Watch for water ingress at roof joins; inspect carefully around skylights.
Dethleffs: Pay attention to rear panel seals — some models had moisture ingress in upper corners.
Bürstner: Known for good build but inspect roof rails and skylight surrounds for leaks.
