Winter Storage Guidance for Motorhomes

Water System & Plumbing

Drain everything: Empty fresh, waste, and hot water tanks fully. Don’t forget the boiler and toilet flush tank.
Leave taps open (in the mid-position, if mixer taps) so any residual water can escape.
Use antifreeze (only if specified by the manufacturer) in waste traps or toilet cassettes to prevent freezing.

Damp & Ventilation

Thoroughly clean and dry the interior before storage — damp thrives in hidden corners.
Leave cupboards, wardrobes, and internal doors ajar to let air circulate.
Use moisture absorbers (or refillable dehumidifier tubs) if stored somewhere prone to condensation.
Lift cushions and mattresses off cold surfaces to prevent mould.

Electrics & Batteries

Disconnect leisure and starter batteries if not on trickle charge.
Top up charge every 4–6 weeks (or use a solar panel/charger if practical).
Switch off all appliances and unplug chargers to avoid phantom drain.

Tyres & Brakes

Move the motorhome occasionally (every 4–6 weeks) to prevent flat spots on tyres.
Overinflate tyres slightly (within manufacturer limits) for long-term storage.
Release the handbrake and use chocks instead, to avoid brakes sticking.

Exterior & Bodywork

Wash and wax before storage to protect paintwork.
Check seals and vents for cracks, repair before moisture creeps in.
Cover or cap flue/exhaust outlets to stop pests nesting inside.
Avoid fully sealing the van with tarps — use a breathable cover if needed.

Gas & Fuel

Turn off gas bottles and disconnect them if storing long term.
Store bottles safely, ideally in a cool, ventilated shed (not indoors).
Top up diesel tank before storage to reduce condensation build-up inside the tank.

General Interior Prep

Defrost and clean fridge/freezer, leave the door slightly ajar.
Vacuum thoroughly to remove crumbs that attract rodents.
Remove soft furnishings (if possible) to store indoors, or stand cushions upright to reduce damp spots.
